Boston, MA + Sam Adams Brewery (by Kyle)

2 January 2013

Boston, MA and Newport, RI

This is Kyle again, I have returned to write another blog about my trip to the East Coast.  Laura and I had an awesome time on New Years and New Years day.  We woke up early this morning in preparation for our trip to Boston and rushed to Kinkos so we could print our bus tickets.  We hauled our stuff quickly to Chinatown and hopped on the Fung-Wah bus.  Laura and I slept on and off throughout the ride and finally arrived in Boston 4 hours later.  We quickly departed the bus station and headed directly to the Sam Adam's brewery. On the way we saw Kady's street!

We got there just in time for the tasting session of their final tour of the day!  The beer was so fresh and amazing!  We met up with some of Laura's friends who were also in Boston (the same ones we met up with on New Year's Eve-Day).

Lily, Laura, Me, Alexian and Eric at Sam Adams!

We headed over to the local pub called Doyles that gives away the signature Sam Adams glasses and had a light dinner with our beer.  The pub was a pretty far walk from the brewery but we made the trek with all our stuff!  Laura and I split some onion rings that were beer battered and we all got Sam Adams beers.

Just as we left the bar, Laura got a call on her cell phone from Illinois.  She thought it was odd (I did too) but we answered anyway and it turned out to be ZipCar.  Apparently the car I had reserved had a dead battery, so they replaced the car for me and told me where I could pick it up.  On top of that, they realized I booked it for an hourly rate instead of a daily rate and changed it to a daily rate, which saved be $250.00!  Right on!  We collected our things and began an epic journey back to the city.  We walked what seemed like a couple miles to Laura's friend's bed and breakfast they were staying at so we could drop off our things.  It was really cold outside so we warmed up for a few minutes, then went back out to brave the wilderness to go to dinner in downtown.  I was carrying a travel suitcase and backpack, and it was already 7 PM, so I was pretty tired.

Laura called her friend Ashley to meet us for dinner in Boston.  We met up with her and her boyfriend Jon at a Taiwanese restaurant downtown and had a crazy feast.  Laura's friends Eric and Lily both spoke Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese) so they ordered for the whole table.  The food was great!  Myself, Laura, Ashley, and her boyfriend broke off from the rest of the pack to get cannoli's from a popular bakery in town called Mikes.  Laura was in heaven! After Mikes we took the train back to over to Cambridge with Ashley and Jon.  They got off the train before us and we kept going a few stops more to where our ZipCar was parked.  When we got to Harvard Square, we had to look for our ZipCar for a little bit but finally found it.  It was in a parking garage under a hotel.  Our car's name was Capers!  This began our journey to Newport, Rhode Island.  It was nice driving the Honda Civic around since a) it was an automatic and b) it drove way smoother than my VW Lupo.

Laura and I arrived in Newport at around midnight and checked into our room.  It was huge!  Laura talked to her family for a bit and we ate cannoles until we were too tired to stay awake.  Tomorrow we are planning to do some sightseeing and seafood eating, so I am sure it will be action packed as always!

Bringing the Cooking Lessons Home

We left the hotel at the Neapolitan time of 10ish or 11ish and headed back to the town to find some breakfast. We parked in another paid parking lot so Kyle was happy. After breakfast we looked in a couple of shops after to see if we could find a ravioli cutter but still no luck. So weird. It was so nice out again, such good luck with the weather. We found another cute look out area that was apart of the "public gardens" we found in the guidebook at the hotel. It was just a little area with benches and the look out, not many flowers or garden like things.  When we were walking back to the car we saw this sign on a wood shop and I had to take a photo for dad. I thought it was so clever! Still on a mission for a ravioli cutter we headed towards Pozzuoli to try and go to their "Costco-Like" or "Walmart-Like" stores they have. One is called Leroy Merlin and the other is Auchan. The one we went to was apart of this huge mall. Kyle and I h...

Sorrento Cooking Class

We lived like true Italians today. Woke up, cooked a huge meal, ate that huge meal, took a nap then started over again. The whole day was full of great pleasures for the both of us and so fulfilling! Literally! We started the cooking class at 10am this morning. It was held in this huge kitchen at the resort we are staying at. Chef Mina was our teacher and she usually has an interpreter but she didnt today which was fine because we thought her English was pretty good. She also knew German which Kyle knows too so that was helpful! She was from Germany originally and then moved to Italy so German is her first language then Italian then English. We both got aprons to wear and started with making a pizza dough from scratch. Mina used live yeast which is something I've never worked with before. Kyle and I both took turns kneading the dough. He was hesitant at first but he did good! Mina covered the dough ball and put it in the oven to rise. After that we made the marinara sa...

Baking Around goes to Italy

Since I couldn't be here for Kyles actual birthday, I made him a cake today instead! Today was the first day I went out on my own. I accomplished ordering a cappuccino and going to the market all by myself! Such an accomplishment. I loved going to the market and looking at everything. I'm pretty sure I was asked like 10 times if I needed help because I would just stand there and stare at all the packaging. This is what I bought to bake a cake with, they even had candles too! It took me about an hour to figure out how to use the oven though. I pretty much took the whole thing apart (not the first time I've taken an oven apart) to find out that you need to light it with a lighter. Luckily the internet was working today so I also went online and searched for the manual for about 30 minutes. Once I decoded that I was ready to bake a cake! Now baking in another country, not terribly difficult...but baking in Kyles kitchen?! Thats another story. The poor guy doesn't reall...
