Colosseum + Rome at Night

Guess what? Its raining in Rome. Typical.

We made it to our hotel, Hotel Saint John. Its really close to the Colosseum so we just walked down there. Actually the San Clemente Church is right across the street, I didn't bring pants with me though so I need to get something to cover up my knees because all I have in my wardrobe are dresses. I have a cover for my shoulders, I was told that before I left but I read in many books today thats its proper to have your knees covered as well.

Since today is Sunday a lot of places are closed but we did stop at this small place down the street for lunch, Kyle got pizza which he wasn't too impressed with. He's too spoiled with Naples pizza now, hes ruined for life with all other pizza places. I just got the house insalata caprese (caprese salad), the mozzarella di bufala (buffalo mozzarella) is heavenly over here!

L for Laura! This was laying on the street and of course I had to pick it up, Kyle thought it was gross that I picked up a sign off the street. He's going to have to get used to that!
Dad you would be proud, I asked Kyle if he knew if this wall we walked by was reinforced or unreinforced and he knew the answer right away as well as the reason behind it! I told him how we eventually made a joke about that question in our family because its been asked so many times.

After lunch we headed over to the Colosseum, that place is huge!! Seriously it looks big in photos but dang, up close is unreal! The place wasn't too crowded because of the rain, and it was Sunday. So we made it inside pretty fast, no wait really.

Arco di Costantino (Arch of Constantine). I absolutely love this arch, it has so much iconography in it and many stories are told through the sculpted pieces all over it. So decorative!

The Forum was right across the street and we walked around for a bit but it really started raining hard so we headed back to the hotel to dry off and look through the books for a place to eat for dinner. We also got to Skype with Kyles family, it was really nice seeing them too! We looked through the books for a place to go to dinner over by the Trevi Fountain. Kyle routed us there but the place we were trying to go to was closed. But luckily its Italy, so there were plenty of other places close by. We just went to the one next door, I got gnocchi! Delizioso!

The Trevi Fountain was beautiful at night, all lit up, same with the spanish steps. And we had an amazing view of the city from the top of the steps. We started counting them but kept getting distracted and eventually gave up. It was raining pretty bad by then so we just took the metro back, which was perfect timing because they close the metro here at 11:30, meaning the trains stop then. Not like New York where you can still hop on a train at 11:30, you need to be already on your way to your destination before they just stop running.

Building a table

So these are some of the things I do all day while I'm home alone when Kyle has to work. I usually go down to the corner cafe then go over to the markets and get what I need for dinner that night or any other random things we seem to need. If its not raining I'll go walk around the neighborhood and get lost and find my way back. This all needs to be done before 1 or 2 because thats nap time over here for everyone. All the shops close up for a few hours and go have huge lunches then sleep till its time to open up again for the evening. So today I built a table during those hours! Kyle bought this table from the NEX (the Navy Exchange on base) because the table he had barely fit the two of us, let alone a crowd if he ever had one. Plus his kitchen is big enough and he had gift cards so might as well! They delivered it around 9am and just put it in the kitchen then left. So it was up to us to build it. Well that was a bigger task than I expected when I started opening up the box.

Wine Tasting in Avellino

Today we went wine tasting with Aldo today in Avellino! The tour started at base and headed up the mountains towards Avellino. They made a stop at a rest area for cafĂ©! My favorite!  It didn't take too long to get up to the winery. The name was Colli Di Castelfranci. Castlefranci is a small village in the heart of Irpinia which is in the Province of Avellino. This logo on the wall their son created. He seemed pretty young and was the one who has started to take over production of the place. Grandpa and dad still lived there and worked but the son did most of it.  The winery is very organic and they try to use all natural everything when they can. They even reuse willow tree branches and things like that for ways to hold up the vines or to tie things together instead of using plastic or metal objects. Aldo is holding some dried branches that when you soak in water they become soft enough to tie into a knot. Inside is where they store the wine in huge

Capri

It was such an early morning this morning! I'm used to waking up early every day but usually I get to go back to sleep after Kyle leaves for work. This time we both had to get up and leave because we were going to Capri! The second we saw who our tour guide was I got so excited because it was Aldo from Pompeii!! We knew then that it would be a good trip and well worth it! First we took a bus down to the docks where Aldo worked it out for us to board an hour early so we got an extra hour on the island. Nice! We got on a catamaran called SNAV that reminded me of the Catalina Flyer. The boat ride to Capri from the bay of Naples is about 50 minutes, I think. I actually wouldn't know because I slept the whole ride over. Capri seriously is the Catalina of Italy. It's really pretty and they have a main tourist harbor where everything is then residential on the back side. We went on this tour once we got there that took us to the Blue Grotto. You took this motorboat o
